We believe if more dome owners could share their specific dome shell costs only, we could predict basic shell design costs more accurately. Nearly all of the dome owners we have spoken with have under budgeted and under estimated their true costs of construction. There is no line item in the budget for construction inexperience, but it can be the largest cost to the owner. *Special note: these costs are divided by square footage of dome shell surface area, square homes are calculated by floor space square footage. Safe Harbor Dome 's first floor is 2000 sq ft, 2nd floor is 1000 sq ft, surface area of dome is 4000 sq ft. |
Dome Costs August 1, 2005 |
These costs are true for our dome only and are specific to South Florida. After our major construction materials were purchased, concrete and rebar prices increased dramatically (about 55%). Slab concrete has risen over the course of our project from $65 per yard to $101 per yard. We have included the stucco interior finish because we felt it was integral to the design of our dome dwelling.
These costs include permits, engineering, site prep for foundation, dirt, concrete, steel, shotcrete, windows, rough plumbing, rough electric, stucco interior finish, equipment rental, second floor construction and materials, and some labor for these specific items only. These costs are accurate for our dome shell.
These costs do not include any finish out costs due to the unique high-tech nature of our dome, these costs are based upon personal likes and are hard to compare from dome to dome (some people want a VW and some people want a Rolls Royce):
finish carpentry, plumbing fixtures, drywall, metal studs (interior walls), stairs and railings, appliances, our front door, land costs, funishings, furniture, exterior coatings, glass block and installation, paint, artistic finishes, trim, doors, carpets, flooring, cabinetry, water heater, water/sewer, lighting fixtures, fans, HVAC equipment, generator package, landscaping, patio, garage, pool, outdoor kitchen, wall bed unit, closets and installation, theatre package, and owner labor.
